Simple Ways To Green Your Coffee & Tea

31 March 2010

Besides leaving it out over the weekend and having an irritating layer of green fuzz growing on it, I mean.

There are lots of small things we do everyday without thinking about them. Over a period of years we develop habits, things we do over and over with very little thought. Not necessarily because they are better, smarter, or easier but just because that is the way we have always done them.

Even our coffee habits. Since so often it is the little things we do that make big differences, here are some ways to green up your coffee.

1. Use your own travel mug at your local coffee shop. Starbucks usually will even give you a percentage discount if you bring your own mug. This means that all of those millions of throw away cups don’t end up in landfills or that nasty little continent of floating garbage in the Pacific.

2. Use permanent coffee filters. They are made, usually, from gold or gold plated stainless steel, and are made to last a long time. The flavor is enhanced by the use of the filter. Paper filters absorb some of the coffee flavor as they filter and cause the coffee to taste dull and lose some of it’s complexity.

3. Use loose leaf tea in a tea infuser or use a tea strainer rather than the tea bags.

4. Unplug your coffee maker as soon as it is done brewing. The clock and other aspects of the coffee maker make it use little bits of electricity all the time and that adds up. Use a thermal carafe to keep your coffee warm.

5. Use Fair trade and shade grown products when possible.

6. There is a small group of farmers from Uganda that have banded together to create a cooperative called Mirembe Kawomera, Delicious Peace. A delicious peace it is because the unique thing about these farmers is that they are Muslim, Christian, and Jewish. This is being distributed in the United States by Thanksgiving Coffee Company. As a Christian, who has been involved quite a bit with both the Muslim and Jewish cultures and beliefs I find this amazing and encouraging. It just shows you that coffee really IS a panacea for everything.

7. Buy local if you can. If you buy straight from the roaster your are often getting better, fresher coffee at a lower price and it is only being shipped once or twice as opposed to numerous times.  I would not trade our coffee for anything!  See the shininess of the beans in the picture? Those are fresh from my roaster, and contain all the oils needed for a awesome cup of coffee.

8. Clean you coffee pot or tea kettle with white vinegar instead of harsh chemicals

9. Give green. Get your peeps hooked on fair trade, organic and shade grown coffees and teas (they really do taste better) by giving them as gifts.

10. Educate yourself.  I have talked to so many people about issues I am concerned about only to have them stop me and say they just don’t want to think about it. As we make consumer choices based on documented facts  we are at least controlling our consumerism. I do not always buy fair trade stuff because sometimes I just don’t have the money. But knowing WHY I should helps me to make those choices when I can.

What Is It About Coffee?

30 March 2010

So I am sitting in Panera drinking coffee, sitting in a comfy chair by the fire, eating ice (yeah I know) - and licking some wounds that were unintentionally administered. If I was home I would be having a harder time getting past it but sitting here, listening to jazz and sipping that coffee I have more perspective.coffee-angst-300x224

I know I wrote a list of the stuff coffee can’t do….but something coffee and tea both seem to do well is to soothe the pained soul with warmth and comfort. I mean…if you are having a meltdown emotionally you usually don’t reach for a coke, right?  In those heavy emotional scenes in the movies people are always drinking coffee or tea (or booze but we aren’t goin’ there, folks).

The truth is that you can’t discuss raw emotions over a milkshake. You can’t grieve something properly if you are sipping on a glass of chocolate milk. And nobody confides their deepest secrets over Kool-Aid unless there is something else in it.

Coffee (and tea) allow you to contemplate your angst while you stare off into space. You can sip unconsciously while your mind is a thousand miles away. No need to worry about burping, bubbles in the nose or anything happy- coffee is like a favorite pair of sweats, a dog, and a worn blanket when you need it to be.

I guess that is why I like it. I even like bad coffee at times like this. It gives me something to do while I am processing.

As IF! Wide Awake Drunks and Other Tales

29 March 2010

Seriously. Can you believe that there have been slow enough news days that the LA Times published an article about how Coffee Won’t Make You Sober? Could I have a show of hands? Did anyone really think it would? Because I want to know.  Coffee, like great food, should not even be imbibed when tipsy because it is a total taste waste! If you are smashed you should drink water. City, tap water. Lukewarm. It doesn’t matter.

Drinking coffee will not make you smarter...You will just think you are.

In light of that I decided to list 10 things coffee won’t do. Ready? (more…)

Huff Your Caffeine

28 March 2010

So, in case you need to get your caffeine fix quickly and you are afraid of scalding your tongue in the process, David Edwards has developed  caffeine that you inhale.

First it was just caffeine...but soon little Jimmy moved on to huffing other things...

First it was just caffeine...but soon little Jimmy moved on to huffing other things...

So many really funny, really sarcastic things to say here…

I get that it could be quicker… and it is great for people who don’t like coffee and still want the buzz. How long until we hear that snorting coffee causes nasal cancer? Yeah, I am just not feeling this one.

I LOVE the smell of coffee…but I also love the taste of it…and I prefer to sip it than snort it.

Thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea? Still trying to stop laughing?

Yeah… me too.

You start with huffing your coffee and pretty soon you have a spoon on the table and a line of cinnamon… where does it stop? Saffron? Soy sauce?

I am sure you see the problem…. it adds a whole new meaning to inhaling your coffee, doesn’t it??

Teavana’s Azteca Fire

15 March 2010

Azteca Fire is one of my new favorite teas. I don’t really know what I was expecting..“chocolate and strawberries with a spicy twist. Blend consists of crushed cocoa, apple bits, strawberry pieces, chocolate bits, safflower petals, and crushed chili pods.”

aztecaI dislike chocolate teas, but when I was in the store and the cover came off this cannister I knew I was taking some of it home. Chocolate…spice..something…it was undefinable and I needed more.

So I did…took some home that is. I made a cup…and tasted it. (more…)

Kinetic Koffee Morning Mayhem

12 March 2010

I am importing some of my old classic posts from Kettle and Cup. This one was written last August after my surgery and before my divorce. IE: some of the personal info is VERY outdated. That’s o.k. ….the review stands. I love Kinetic Koffee even if they can’t spell

August 2009morningmayhem_preview-lo1

While I was in the hospital Marc gleefully let me know that the Kinetic Koffee had arrived at our house.

Did you ever try to yell when your throat was all messed up? It is not a great sound. “Don’t open it! ” I whispered at the top of my lungs. ” I need to review it!”

Meanwhile I was staring at a lovely hospital tray of sugar-free jello and some sort of broth. I didn’t want to ask the origin of the broth, either. Hospitals are foodie hell. Let’s just get that clear. VA hospitals are worse.  I seriously want to contact Gordon Ramsey and have him make over their menu. THAT would be reality show to watch!

The first one we tried when I got home was the Morning Mayhem.

This is a rich, dark Italian roast. (more…)
