Tea Sets, Can You Imagine This?

29 September 2009

Picture a traditional tea and you may well imagine an elaborate silver tea set with a gracious Victorian hostess pouring Earl Grey. Did you ever wonder who began the whole tea set tradition?

Well it was the Chinese, centuries ago, but I since I want to chat about the Victorian style sets and I don’t want to get into a long history lesson that aspect of it will wait.

Tea was first brought into Portugal by a missionary who had spent time in China. Prior to his documentation of the use of tea caravans had brought small amounts in to Europe but no one really knew what to do with them. Rather than making a drink they ate the leaves and poured off the tea. Can you imagine? (more…)

Want Your Eggnog Latte Early?

28 September 2009

I know, it is way too early for eggnog but tempis fugit, right? Starbucks’s Eggnog Latte is one of the drinks I like and I have been working on a version of one. Now, nearly anyone can make them because you can start with your handy dandy frozen JazzyBird shot if you don’t have an espresso maker! How cool is that?

Do not try to make an Eggnog Latte low cal, please? There are just some things  meant to be high calorie and this is one. (more…)

Saturday Mug of the Week

26 September 2009

I am about to let you in on a little secret. I am not sure my family even knows this…

Ready?

I have a thing for John Wayne.

Sigh.

John Wayne was all that is man…at least in his movies. I have never been one of those “I can take care of myself, thank you” types of women. Nope.

Not that I can’t. I mean I have a pretty lethal right hook. I went through boot camp. I shot an M-16 and enjoyed it…I even threw grenades…. I can stare down nearly anyone.

But, I like a man that knows how to protect a woman. And John Wayne did.  When I saw this John Wayne mug I knew it was going on today’s mug of the week.

Sigh. Swoon.

The 10 Coffee Shop Commandments

24 September 2009

I was sitting here and thinking of all of the weirdness that goes on in coffee shops. I mean, talk about slice of life!

The thing is that different people go to coffee shops for different reasons. Marc and I go to have some time alone and talk. Some people go to have business meetings. Students go there to study. Lots of people with lots of reasons and sometimes the lifestyles clash.

So, here are -

Stealing WIFI-Is It Okay?

22 September 2009

I was reading an article in the Newark Advocate online about a woman charged with stealing WIFI. There were other issues as well but the idea of WIFI theft is what I am interested in.

arrested

First of all, can you steal WIFI? I mean, the coffee shop that offers it for customers is paying for it regardless, as far as I know. They don’t pay per customer. At what point should a person be considered to be stealing WIFI?

Top Picks- Tea You Should Try

21 September 2009

I know that lately Kettle and Cup has been more Cup than Kettle but there is a good reason for that. Apparently coffee roasters are a more generous bunch than purveyors of fine teas because I regularly am offered coffee for sampling and reviewing and tea companies prefer that I pay cold hard cash.

Since cold, hard cash has been a little elusive around the Audet household lately I have been drinking coffee.

Coffee Mug of the Week

19 September 2009

It is no secret that I really don’t like the current administration. And, if the truth be known, I don’t like the increasing government intrusion that seems to have occurred over the past decade or so. I  think that the Consititution has been turned into a list of suggestions, much like the Ten Commandments.

SO….I could not resist this Disappearing Civil Liberties mug and more than likely it will be finding its way into my home very soon…

civil-liberitesYep. The entire Bill of Rights is listed on the mug. As you pour hot coffee in and you rights disappear one…by….one. Constitutional erosion - it’s what is happening in Washington only this is quicker and at least you get caffeinated at the same time.

Kohana Alamo Joe Coffee

17 September 2009

So the team at Kohana Coffee made it possible for me to have an totally new experience - I got to name a new coffee blend! How fun is that?
They wanted something that reflected Texas because this coffee is going to be sold on Regional Best, and while I came up with several suggestions they liked Alamo Joe.

I got a bag of beans in the mail yesterday.  When you open the bag the aroma of the beans jumps out at you in an in your face, friendly Texan way. Spicy and rich, the scent is faintly licorice. The flavor is bright with citrus and herbs in the foretaste and a very faint peppery flavor that lingers like an old friend saying goodbye.

I think Alamo Joe is a great name for this coffee. Friendly, easy to like, with all of the upfront honesty of a West Texas cowboy. This is a blue jeans and boots kinda brew; laid back but with some fire in the hearth.

I am giving it a 4.0. Would have liked the roast to have been a touch darker, with a little more experience to go along with that passion. My guess is that if you just like good, hot coffee in your favorite mug that this will be one you like a lot.

Cafe Latte in Town East Mall, Mesquite Tx

17 September 2009

About once every six weeks I drive up to Mesquite to Towne East Mall to get my hair done at Tony and Guys. That has nothing to do with coffee but it does explain what I was doing there and how I found Cafe Latte, right?

coffee_at_library
Usually Ethan (not quite 16) and I go. We get haircuts and then head to the Starbucks in the mall for coffee. Except…a few months ago Starbucks pulled out of the mall. So, we got haircuts but went coffee-less. So sad.

Well, Ethan and I were strolling around the mall and all of a sudden he said (with great excitement), “Mom! Look! Coffee!”
Sure enough, there in all of it’s caffeinated glory was a coffee shop. It beckoned us. We caved.
